Volunteers and supporters of the Alzheimer’s Association gathered on Aug. 15 at Miami’s International Mall to support the great strides being made in research and development of new drugs.
On hand that morning were members of the GFWC Doral West Dade Woman’s Club (DWDWC) dressed in their club shirts who are looking forward to celebrating the club’s first anniversary on Sept. 10 and already have participated in many events.
For the Mall Crawl, club member Arely Ruiz stepped up as team captain and recruited several members from the DWDWC and Coral Gables Woman’s Club to join the team including Ruth Martinez, Linda Hartwell, Jodi Steinbauer, Susie Vicaria, and DWDWC president Gloria Burns.
DWDWC first vice president Maria Prado, general manager of the mall, and her staff did an amazing job decorating the mall and making sure everyone enjoyed the morning. During this fun event participants visited numerous stores offering little gifts, promotions, and samplings of some tasty treats and lots of good shopping as well.
In other charity news, founders of Freedom Feasts, Sebastian Fajardo, Alisa Aldo and Gabriella Lopez, students from St. Brendan High School, created a wonderful way to honor veterans through food, community, and fine service — no buffet lines for vets but table service.
Several months ago, they began a partnership of sorts with American Legion Post 98, volunteering as servers for regular dinner meetings for American Legions members. The veterans love them and the relationship has allowed the students to tackle their own fundraiser at Post 98.
The students took over the kitchen to hold “Brunch in Full Bloom: Celebrating the Women Who Do It All,” on Aug. 8.
With the goal of feeding veterans, these remarkable young people have been working for several months alongside Post 98 Commander JC Gomez and his dedicated team of volunteers. The brunch honored not only women who served in the military, but all women whose leadership, volunteerism and service have made a positive impact on our community.
The talented St. Brendan students prepared and served an impressive brunch buffet, while guests dressed in spring-inspired attire enjoyed a Build-Your-Own Bouquet Bar. Throughout the afternoon, student violinist Mayum Brito entertained the crowd with beautiful classical music.
Commander JC Gomez welcomed guests and praised the many volunteers who have supported the Post throughout the year. One of the event’s highlights was a moving presentation by Julie Robison, founder and CEO of the South Dade Women Veterans Alliance (SDWVA). Julie captivated guests as she shared her journey from a difficult home life to serving in a military field artillery unit, as well as her experience as a survivor of military sexual trauma.
While working at the VA Hospital, Julie heard many powerful stories from other women veterans. She is now developing the Legacy Project Initiative to ensure those stories are heard, preserved and never forgotten. The project will include a series of books featuring the experiences of women veterans. Julie encourages women veterans interested in sharing their stories to contact her.
Guests included members of the South Dade Women Veterans Alliance, representatives from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, whose members have partnered with Post 98 on several events, and members of the Doral West Dade Woman’s Club.
