I am thrilled to announce that the Zoo Miami Foundation is partnering with Biscayne Bay Brewery in an exciting effort to raise awareness about the American flamingo and its conservation. Through this collaboration, two percent of the proceeds from every can of Tropical Bay IPA sold will directly support flamingo conservation and educational initiatives through the Zoo Miami Foundation.
This partnership is also part of a larger campaign to have the American flamingo officially designated as the state bird of Florida during the next legislative session in Tallahassee this coming March.
Florida deserves a state bird that is as unique, iconic, and extraordinary as the state itself. Today, that distinction belongs to the Northern Mockingbird. While I have tremendous respect for the mockingbird, I believe the time has come for Florida to recognize the American flamingo as our official State Bird.
This effort is not about diminishing the mockingbird; it is about celebrating Florida’s unique identity. The Northern Mockingbird is also the state bird of Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. It is a beautiful, adaptable species, but it is also one of the most widespread birds in North America. It simply cannot tell the uniqueness and diversity of Florida’s story.
The American flamingo does.
Florida is unlike any other state in our nation. We are home to the Everglades, the largest subtropical wilderness in the continental United States, and to extraordinary ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth. The flamingo reflects that uniqueness. Elegant yet resilient, vibrant yet wild, it embodies the tropical spirit that has captivated residents and visitors from around the world for generations.
The flamingo is also one of Florida’s greatest economic ambassadors. For decades, it has been among the most recognizable symbols or our state, appearing in art, advertising, architecture, fashion, and popular culture. Ironically, while countless businesses and organizations have embraced the flamingo as a symbol of Florida, our state has never officially done so.
It is time.
By choosing the American flamingo as Florida’s official State Bird, we would celebrate not only an iconic species, but also the remarkable conservation success story unfolding before our eyes. Once driven from Florida by hunting and habitat loss, wild flamingos are returning to our wetlands, a powerful reminder that when we protect nature, nature can recover.

Together, we can help protect this magnificent species and make history by giving Florida a state bird that truly reflects the beauty, uniqueness, and spirit of the Sunshine State.
