TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Drivers in Tallahassee’s Market District have a key route back.
Maclay Boulevard reopened Aug. 31, restoring a popular north-south connection ahead of the busier shopping and dining season. The reopening came at the request of the Market District Association.
A section of Maclay Commerce Drive immediately west of the roundabout at Maclay Commerce Drive and Maclay Boulevard remains closed as roadway and utilities work continues. Customers can still access Window World and the Tallahassee Dance Academy via Martin Hurst Drive.
Construction of the park will continue on both sides of Maclay Boulevard, requiring temporary, short-term closures from time to time. Once the park is completed in 2027, the roadway will be closed to traffic for a couple of weeks to finalize paving and striping. The timing of that closure is expected to be coordinated well in advance to limit disruption.
The work is part of the Market District Multi-Purpose Stormwater Project, a roughly 30-acre effort aimed at keeping pace with growth and improving the quality of stormwater flowing to Lake Jackson. Plans include stormwater system upgrades, roadway improvements tied to the area’s “Sense of Place” efforts, and beautification intended to improve mobility.
Major electric infrastructure has also been upgraded, with transmission lines east of the electrical substation that previously ran through the ponds relocated to improve reliability and aesthetics.
Project elements include beautifying and improving Maclay Commerce Drive and Maclay Boulevard from Maclay Commerce Drive to Mosswood Chase, creating areas for family-friendly activities, promoting outdoor business activities, adding walking and jogging trails, and establishing open space for special events. The multi-purpose project is planned as four general areas designed to flow together, each with its own elements.
