PORT ST. LUCIE – St. Lucie County Fire District is investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a first-floor apartment at Peacock Run Apartments in the 5500 block of Northwest East Torino Parkway, Port St. Lucie on Aug. 29.
Crews responded to the fire, finding moderate smoke coming from the porch area of a first-floor apartment in the three-story building.
The crew initiated fire attack, followed by searches of the affected apartment and building to ensure occupants were safely evacuated, according to a fire district Facebook posting.
One person was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, according to the Facebook posting.
Firefighters also located two pets inside the apartment. One cat was successfully treated with oxygen and recovered. A bird was removed from the apartment but unfortunately did not survive, according to the Facebook posting.
The American Red Cross was contacted to assist affected occupants.
“We appreciate the quick actions of the residents and bystanders who helped evacuate the building and alerted emergency responders,” the district wrote in its Facebook posting.
After the emergency was under control, firefighters took time with some of the children who evacuated, teaching them about water supply and handing out fire helmets, according to the Facebook posting.
