ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The Church of Eleven22 is looking to expand its growing network of campuses with a new facility at the Shoppes of Valley Ridge shopping center in Ponte Vedra, according to the Jacksonville Daily Record.
The Jacksonville Daily Record reports that, according to an application filed in August, the church plans to construct a two-story, 44,928-square-foot building on an undeveloped lot within the shopping center at 10850 U.S. 1, flanked by existing retail buildings. Jacksonville-based Langan Engineering & Environmental Services Inc. is consulting on the project.
Zoning approval required
According to the Jacksonville Daily Record, the shopping center falls within the Pope Site Planned Unit Development, enacted in 2019 under Ordinance No. 2019-37. The ordinance rezoned roughly 11.99 acres from Open Rural to PUD, allowing up to 94,000 square feet of commercial use. Because the church’s proposed use is not currently permitted under the PUD — and because the facility would seat more than 1,000 people, classifying it as a “large place of assembly” under Section 2.03.12(C) of the county’s Land Development Code — a PUD modification is required.
The Jacksonville Daily Record reports that under county policy, minor modifications require review by the county’s planning and zoning agency but do not require approval by the full Board of County Commissioners unless an appeal is filed. As of Aug. 31, a planning and zoning hearing had not been scheduled.
A congregation on the grow
Founded in 2012 by Lead Pastor Joby Martin as a single service at Beach United Methodist Church in Jacksonville Beach, The Church of Eleven22 has grown into one of Northeast Florida’s largest congregations, the Jacksonville Daily Record reports. The church now operates campuses across Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties, as well as in South Georgia.
The church’s website lists more than a dozen campuses, including locations in Arlington, Baymeadows, Fleming Island, Mandarin, North Jacksonville, Orange Park, Palatka, Ponte Vedra, San Pablo and St. Augustine, along with prison ministry campuses.
Locations in the Riverside area of Jacksonville and in Orlando are listed as “coming soon.”
In addition, the Jacksonville Daily Record reports the church signed a long-term agreement April 20 to upgrade and secure exclusive use of the Glass Factory event space near downtown Jacksonville.
