ORLANDO, Fla. – The man Orlando police say killed a swan at Lake Eola one year ago is back behind bars again, accused of a metal pipe rampage in broad daylight on Monday.
34-year-old Adonis Leyva is facing felony criminal mischief charges in connection with the incident, which happened along busy East Colonial Drive.
Investigators say he smashed an Arby’s window with the pipe, terrifying one of the female workers there, and then continued to damage nearby property by striking a Dunkin’ Donuts sign.
He is also accused of throwing the pipe at cars while also walking in the roadway.
Leyva was spotted moments later by responding officers at the Wawa across the street, and identified by the Arby’s worker, according to an arrest affidavit.
“I’m glad everybody’s alright,” Kim Long, who was filling up for gas at the Wawa, said. “I hope he gets the help that he needs.”
On Tuesday morning, a worker at a nearby PNC Bank branch noticed that the ATM had been smashed.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, which appeared to show Leyva at that location on Monday as well. He faces an additional felony charge for the PNC bank property damage.
News 6 reviewed court records, which show Leyva was arrested nearly a year ago at Lake Eola in a separate, high-profile case involving the killing of a swan.
People at the lake on Tuesday said they have questions about Leyva’s violent, erratic behavior in public places.
“Nobody would feel safe,” Elizabeth Guerrero said. “I don’t think anybody that does cruelty or has harming in their hearts should be free.”
Records also show Leyva went through a mental competency evaluation in that case, and a judge found him fit to stand trial.
Court records indicate he later pleaded no contest and was released less than a month ago after spending 344 days in jail.
News 6 contacted State Attorney Monique Worrell’s office asking whether Leyva received mental health treatment as part of the earlier case and whether he was on probation.
The State Attorney’s Office has not yet answered those questions.
A sign posted at the Arby’s referenced in the police report indicates the restaurant is “no longer open.”
