Waymo’s simultaneous launch in three cities tests whether its autonomous ride-hailing model scales as quickly as its ambitions suggest
Waymo has begun welcoming public riders in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, bringing its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to 14 US cities. Tens of thousands of residents in each location have pre-registered, with access to be expanded progressively as the firm works toward an open service.
The launches follow months of local validation testing for the Waymo Driver autonomous system, which the firm says is involved in 94% fewer serious injury crashes than human drivers under comparable conditions. Ahead of each launch, Waymo coordinated with first responders, local officials and community groups across all three cities.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis framed the Denver launch in terms of clean energy and transport policy, while Tampa Mayor Jane Castor cited the city’s aim to broaden its transport network. Waymo has also highlighted accessibility benefits for older adults and people with disabilities as part of its expansion rationale.
