Liberty Creek’s pitcher Drew Massey gets set to throw the ball in their Class 3A state tournament game against Heritage at Blackman’s David Price Field in Murfreesboro. SHANE POTTER
Liberty Creek junior pitcher Drew Massey’s commitment — to Jacksonville State on Tuesday — marked yet another baseball branch for their family tree.
Massey was the District 9-3A MVP and a Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State selection as a sophomore, recording a 1.25 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 44 ⅔ innings. Also a corner outfielder for the Wolves, who reached the TSSAA Class 3A tournament, he hit .330 at the plate with 17 RBIs, 16 walks and just 18 strikeouts in over 100 plate appearances.
He is the son of former Mr. Baseball winner and Austin Peay standout Seth Massey – now Liberty Creek’s athletic director – and the younger brother of Matthew Massey, who starred at Station Camp then signed with Freed-Hardeman.
His uncle John caught at Ole Miss and Tennessee before becoming a two-time MLB draftee, first by the Chicago Cubs in the 18th round then in the 31st round to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2000. His cousins are former Vanderbilt pitcher Will Clinard and recent Los Angeles Angels call-up Luke Murphy.
Drew Massey is the second Division I baseball commit from Sumner County since the summer, joining Beech senior and Florida pledge Liam Dougherty.
