A rare mid-century modern gem designed by the renowned Central and North Central Florida architect Harry Merritt Jr. is for sale for the very first time.
The home was built in 1976 for Dr. and Mrs. John Hodgin and has remained in the family since. It has also since made its way into the University of Florida’s Harry Merritt Papers, a documented preservation of the noted architect’s works dating back to 1954.
Merritt Jr. started his career at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where he studied under Walter Gropius and Paul Rudolph. He went on to work with renowned architect Gene Leedy, whose work includes Winter Haven’s historic “Guest House” and the Winter Park home that was Rollins College’s very first frat house.
His homes are marked by his signature use of Ocala block construction, floor-to-ceiling windows and a focus on the surrounding landscapes.
Merritt’s latest creation to hit the market is located at 291 Maple Court in Oviedo. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-story home is described as the design Merritt was “most proud of,” according to the listing.
The mid-century modern home comes with a large enclosed courtyard and unobstructed views of the property’s very “old-Florida” landscape. It has, up until now, been cared for as a single-family home and is on the market for the first time, according to property records.
It’s priced at $675,000, and the agent handling the sale is Dominic Persampiere with Optima Real Estate.
