Here’s something that doesn’t happen nearly enough in live music: the audience actually gets a vote. A real one. At the end of the night, every person in the building picks up an electronic device and decides who wins. That’s the whole premise behind Gulfport’s Battle of the Bands, and it’s exactly as great as it sounds. And before you ask, yes, you’re supposed to be partisan about it. Pick a side. Vote accordingly.
The event goes down Saturday, September 19, at the Catherine A. Hickman Theater (5501 27th Ave. S) in Gulfport, running from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. The Gulfport Senior Foundation is hosting this as the first of four quarterly competitions. Each winner advances to the 2027 championship for the title of Gulfport’s Band of the Year. There’s a whole bracket at play here, and your vote is what determines who fills it.
The competitors
Four Tampa Bay bands are competing, and they cover a fascinatingly wide range of sounds. Nzou & The AfroSoul opens things up. Led by Jeremiah “Nzou,” a musician originally from Zimbabwe and now based in Florida, the band blends African folk with Afro-jazz and soulful melodies inspired by Oliver Mtukudzi. It’s music with real roots and a presence that’s entirely its own, and it’s the kind of set that tends to stop a room.
Grego Anderson follows with his blues-influenced rock style, original compositions, and the kind of expressive guitar work that’s earned him a loyal following across the Tampa Bay scene. Then Dave Gulino & The Mercenaries show up, and if you’ve ever been in a Gulf Beaches bar when this band is playing, you already know exactly what you’re in for. Classic rock, blues, and dance favorites delivered with the confidence of a band that’s done this long enough to make it look easy. And Chinnie & The Resurrection close the night out with soul, reggae, rock, and funk in a way that turns a Saturday night into a story.

Tickets run $33.85 for General Admission and $49.87 for VIP. The VIP experience includes a complimentary drink, hors d’oeuvres, preferred seating, and an exclusive pre-show reception in the dining hall. All tickets are on sale through September 18. The event is 18 and up.
