ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWSB) – The Tampa Bay Rays dropped their series finale at home against the Mets 10-4 on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Mets claim the three-game series 2-1.
The Rays entered Wednesday up 4.5 games on the Yankees in the American League East. A win would have been the eighth in their last ten games.
Things started unraveling early, as the Mets weren’t the most welcoming to a returning starting pitcher Griffin Jax. Jax was returning from being on the 15 Day Injured List, having last pitched for Tampa Bay on August 2nd.
Jared Young hit an RBI single with two on for the Mets in the top of the first, scoring one, with a second runner reaching on an error for an early 2-0 lead. The Mets added another run on a Marcus Semien base hit that scored Young for the 3-0 advantage.
Then in the top of the third, Brett Baty delivered with the bases loaded for New York, clearing the bases and handing the Mets a 6-0 lead. That would be the last batter that Jax faced for the evening.
The Rays bats came alive in the third with a Jonathan Aranda single to left to score Taylor Walls. Then in the fourth, Cedric Mullins reached second and drove in Chandler Simpson, with a defensive error from New York.
Later in the fourth, Richie Palacios hit a two-run blast to score Mullins and cut the deficit to 6-4.
In the top of the 7th, Nick Mirabito was able to register his first big league hit in dramatic fashion, a bases-clearing double to put the Mets in front 9-4. Juan Soto tacked on a solo shot in the top of the 8th to give the Mets the 10-4 victory.
In the loss, Junior Caminero’s 15-game hitting streak came to an end.
Now the Rays will turn their attention to a road trip, heading to Arlington to take on the Rangers, then on to Atlanta to face the Braves. Tampa Bay will be back at home on September 11th against the Houston Astros.
