JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A disc dog league meeting most Monday nights at Oceanway Park in Jacksonville is welcoming new participants — and their dogs don’t even need to know how to catch a frisbee to join.
The Worldwide Toss and Fetch League launched in 2015, with Jacksonville joining in the spring of 2018. The local chapter has been active ever since, and now, the K9 Frisbee Worldwide Championship Regionals are returning to Jacksonville on Saturday at Oceanway Park.
For anyone interested in getting involved in the K9 Frisbee world, Jacksonville Disc Dogs offers a laid-back entry point for beginners while still catering to more experienced competitors.
“It’s a great place for new people to start or experienced people to play,” said Colleen Hegyi, a local league organizer. “If your dog has a natural retrieve of a ball or anything, we can usually switch them over to discs in a short period of time.”
Hegyi said the transformation can happen quickly.
“Many a dog has started League not playing frisbee and ended up being a disc dog at the end of one five-week session,” she said.
The league plays what it calls “seasons” — five-week blocks of competition on Monday nights at 7 p.m. at Oceanway Park. Between seasons, the group shifts to UPDOG-format games before returning to traditional toss and fetch play.

Participant Maggie Nipper said the environment is welcoming, regardless of skill level.
“It’s super beginner-friendly, no pressure,” Nipper said. “It’s a great environment for humans and dogs.”
Nipper’s own dog, Kiwi, a Labradoodle, had no retrieve instinct when she started. Food motivation made the difference.
“If she looked at the frisbee, she got a snack. If she touched the frisbee, she got a snack. And now she gets it,” Nipper said.
The league meets most Monday nights at Oceanway Park on Sago Avenue in Jacksonville.
