TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is turning off Flock cameras under their control.
Tuesday, Undersheriff Ron Cave said it could take their vendors a couple of weeks to take the cameras down but said they likely will not put bags over them in the meantime.
Cave said the technology has been very helpful, but the sheriff weighed other factors, too.
“Public trust and our accountability to the public is far more important,” Cave said. “We can still perform our job. We can still perform our duties as it relates to reducing crime without the LPR technology. And, so the sheriff has said we’re going to pause the program right now and reevaluate it.”
Cave said the sheriff was already considering the suspension before Governor Ron DeSantis issued a memo removing the cameras from all state roads yesterday.
The Tallahassee Police Department will also be removing license plate readers from state roads. TPD did not say what their plans are for the rest of the license plate readers across the city.
A TPD spokesperson said they are looking forward to discussing the topic at the next City Commission meting.
“The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) recognizes the significant value tools like license plate readers can provide in investigations involving missing persons, human trafficking and violent offenses. TPD will comply with the Florida Department of Transportation’s directive regarding automated license plate readers located within state roadway rights-of-ways and looks forward to the City Commission’s discussion about this issue at its Sept. 9 meeting,” TPD’s statement said.
