Florida approves $6 million in LINE funding for university nursing programs, intercollegiate athletics recommendations

  • September 3, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Florida Board of Governors approved $6 million Thursday for the Linking Industry to Nursing Education fund for 10 state universities and recommendations on college athletics.

The LINE funding will be shared across 23 proposals from participating schools within the State University System of Florida. This includes both Florida A&M University and Florida State University.

Funds for the 2026-2027 fiscal year are projected to produce more than 2,100 nursing scholarships and accept nearly 1,000 additional students in the System’s nursing programs.

LINE was established in 2022 as a competitive grant opportunity providing matching funds to participating institutions partnering with healthcare providers and collaborating to meet local, regional and statewide demand for nurses.

Ten of the approved proposals support and expand the System’s nursing faculty.

“Through meaningful partnerships between our universities and healthcare systems throughout the state, we are enhancing our nursing programs with hands-on learning and ensuring our graduates provide exceptional care for Floridians in all stages of life,” said System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues.

The Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics also presented recommendations and approved a statement that describes the Board’s guiding principles for supporting a sustainable and student-centered model.

The Task Force was formed in January 2026 to discuss the evolving landscape of college athletics, including financial, operational and governance challenges.

“The Task Force has done an incredible job of collaboratively developing these recommendations, and the Board’s approval reflects our dedication to transparent, competitive, and fair models that unify System athletics and support student-athletes’ success both on campus and beyond graduation,” said Board Chair Alan Levine.
