Miami, FL – South Florida experienced months of persistent heat during a summer marked by record temperatures and unusually warm nights.
South Florida recorded one of its hottest summers in 2026 as temperatures remained above normal across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties during June, July and August.
Meteorological summer covers those three months, which brought repeated afternoon temperatures in the 90s and heat index readings that frequently climbed above 100 degrees.
Miami reached 100 degrees on August 18, tying the city’s all-time temperature record established on July 21, 1942.
Records at Miami International Airport date to 1895.
The reading marked only the second time Miami officially reached triple digits.
Westerly winds helped prevent the Atlantic sea breeze from reaching the coast and providing its usual cooling effect.
Fort Lauderdale reached 98 degrees that day, matching a daily record.
An extreme heat warning was issued for Miami-Dade and Broward counties the following day as heat index values approached 112 degrees.
Miami also reached 96 degrees on July 31, breaking the previous daily record of 95 degrees set in 1999.
August became Fort Lauderdale’s hottest August on record, with an average temperature near 85.8 degrees.
Miami averaged approximately 85.9 degrees, ranking as its second-hottest August.
West Palm Beach also recorded one of its warmest Augusts.
The heat included nearly 56 consecutive days of temperatures reaching at least 90 degrees in Miami.
Florida finished meteorological summer with one of its five highest statewide average temperatures on record.
Much of the peninsula also received below-normal rainfall as dry air, Saharan dust and limited thunderstorms reduced afternoon cooling.

patients with non-small cell lung cancer, according to new research published Wednesday (September 2) in the New England Journal of Medicine. The trial, led by Kathryn Arbour, MD, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, involved 136 patients whose tumors had RAS gene mutations and who had not responded to other therapies.

In the phase 1/2 clinical trial, more than 30% of participants experienced tumor shrinkage and improved health after taking daily doses of daraxonrasib for three weeks at a time. The drug’s effects lasted longer than standard chemotherapy, with a median progression-free survival of 8.3 months and a median overall survival of 16 months. The drug was generally well tolerated, and side effects were less severe than those from chemotherapy.

Daraxonrasib works by targeting RAS mutations, which are found in about 30% of lung cancer cases and are known to drive tumor growth. For decades, these mutations had been considered “undruggable,” but new approaches have allowed scientists to develop compounds that can disrupt their function. Daraxonrasib, developed by Revolution Medicines, acts as a “molecular glue” that binds to both normal and mutant RAS proteins, blocking their ability to signal uncontrolled cell growth, as explained in Nature.

The trial also established 200mg as the optimal daily dose for future studies, balancing effectiveness and long-term tolerance. The therapy offers patients the convenience of a once-daily oral pill, which allows for more flexibility and potentially a better quality of life compared to frequent chemotherapy infusions.

A larger phase 3 study is now underway, comparing daraxonrasib directly with standard chemotherapy to determine its effectiveness and safety over time. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to review results from this ongoing trial before considering approval of daraxonrasib for lung cancer treatment.

Researchers hope that daraxonrasib’s ability to target a broad range of RAS mutations—unlike earlier targeted therapies that only worked on specific types—will help more patients, including those who develop resistance to other treatments. For pancreatic cancer, daraxonrasib nearly doubled average survival and was recently approved by the FDA under the brand name Rasonque.

“These are exciting times,” Dr. Arbour said, noting the potential for daraxonrasib to expand treatment options for people with difficult-to-treat cancers. More research will clarify how long the drug remains effective and whether it can benefit even more patients in the future, as outlined in the New England Journal of Medicine.

”,”schedule”:{},”type”:”html”}],”canonical_url”:”https://www.iheart.com/content/2026-09-03-pancreatic-cancer-drug-shows-early-promise-for-lung-cancer-patients/”,”cuser”:”user/ldap/cccnyc1wjg”,”enable_featured_widget”:true,”exclusion”:{“tags”:[]},”external_url”:””,”fb_allow_comments”:true,”featured_widget”:{“country”:””,”id”:””,”kind”:””,”related_id”:””},”feed_content_id”:””,”feed_partner_content”:false,”feed_permalink”:””,”feed_type”:””,”feed_vendor”:””,”include_recommendations”:true,”include_video_monetization”:true,”is_sponsored”:false,”keywords”:[“keywords/ai-assisted”],”primary_image”:{“bucket”:”assets.getty”,”id”:”%2F6539b9993a9de92921f4c27a”},”primary_target”:{“categories”:[“categories/national-news”],”distribution”:[“brands/iHeartRadio”]},”publish_date”:1788456960000,”publish_end_date”:4115978604802,”publish_origin”:”brands/iHeartRadio”,”seo_title”:””,”show_updated_timestamp”:false,”simplereach_enabled”:false,”slug”:”2026-09-03-pancreatic-cancer-drug-shows-early-promise-for-lung-cancer-patients”,”social_title”:””,”summary”:”Researchers say the pill offers hope for better survival and quality of life, with larger trials underway to confirm results.”,”targets”:[{“categories”:[“categories/national-news”],”distribution”:[“facets/All Sites – English”]},{“categories”:[“syndications/apple-news”],”distribution”:[]},{“categories”:[“syndications/news”],”distribution”:[]}],”title”:”Pancreatic Cancer Drug Shows Early Promise For Lung Cancer Patients”,”permalink”:”https://wiod.iheart.com/content/2026-09-03-pancreatic-cancer-drug-shows-early-promise-for-lung-cancer-patients/”},”slug”:”2026-09-03-pancreatic-cancer-drug-shows-early-promise-for-lung-cancer-patients”,”summary”:{“image”:”https://i.iheart.com/v3/re/assets.getty/6539b9993a9de92921f4c27a”,”title”:”Pancreatic Cancer Drug Shows Early Promise For Lung Cancer Patients”,”description”:”Researchers say the pill offers hope for better survival and quality of life, with larger trials underway to confirm results.”,”author”:”iHeartRadio”},”pub_start”:1788456960000,”pub_until”:4115978604802,”pub_changed”:1788457324262,”subscription”:[{“tags”:[“categories/national-news”,”brands/iHeartRadio”]},{“tags”:[“categories/national-news”,”facets/All Sites – English”]},{“tags”:[“syndications/apple-news”]},{“tags”:[“syndications/news”]}],”exclusion”:[{“tags”:[]}],”linksData”:[],”lookup”:[“publish_origin:brands/iHeartRadio”,”id:/6a99b064605f8e483b93e87d”,”slug:2026-09-03-pancreatic-cancer-drug-shows-early-promise-for-lung-cancer-patients”,”slug:2026-09-03-pancreatic-cancer-drug-shows-early-promise-for-lung-cancer-patients”,”keyword:keywords/ai-assisted”,”author:user”]}},{“id”:”%2F6a99aedf0d899634086af759″,”type”:”PUBLISHING”,”record”:{“ref_id”:”%2F6a99aedf0d899634086af759″,”type”:”content”,”payload”:{“amp_enabled”:true,”apple_news”:{“ref_id”:”b295afe6-762f-4930-bfff-e52f623c94af”,”revision_id”:”AAAAAAAAAAD//////////w==”},”author”:””,”blocks”:[{“attributes”:{“mimetype”:”image/jpeg”,”type”:”image”},”bucket”:”assets.getty”,”caption”:”LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – AUGUST 13: Michael Wilson #14 of the Arizona Cardinals is pushed out of bounds by Eric Stokes #5 of the Las Vegas Raiders after catching a pass for a first down in the first quarter of a preseason game at Allegiant Stadium on August 13, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
