Mandarin’s QB pipeline rolls on: Meet Knox Annis, the next name in line

  • September 4, 2026

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mandarin’s season has started fast.

The Mustangs followed a Week 1 road win with a dominant Week 2 performance, shutting out Atlantic Coast 50-0 to take the Principal’s Cup. Now, they enter a bye week unbeaten — a chance to heal, sharpen, and keep pushing toward the bigger goal: a state championship.

But inside Mandarin’s program, the story isn’t only about the wins. It’s also about who’s leading the offense — and the quarterback pipeline that’s become a calling card for the Mustangs.

A pipeline built over years

Mandarin High School opened in 1990, and early in the school’s history, the football program was still finding its footing — so new that the first team had to be bused to a local park for its first-ever practice.

Decades later, Mandarin has become known for developing quarterbacks who earn opportunities at the next level.

Most notably: Carson Beck, who became a state champion and Florida’s Mr. Football before moving on to college football and ultimately the NFL. Tre Lawrence followed by playing at Alcorn State. Then Tramell Jones followed, now at the University of Florida competing for a starting job.

Now it’s Knox Annis.

Annis, a junior quarterback, says the path that brought him to Mandarin was clear — because he watched what the quarterbacks before him built.

“It was really just like Carson and TJ,” Annis said. “Yeah, I saw the lineage. And I just want to be a part of it.”

He says his love for football goes back as far as he can remember.

“I started playing football – gosh I can’t even remember – my whole life,” Annis said. “I played every position. I just… I love the game so much.”

‘Knox eats and sleeps the game’

Bullock says each quarterback in the pipeline brought something different to the position — but describes Annis as uniquely consumed by the sport.

“Carson had an outside life… Tramell was so even keel,” Bullock said. “Knox eats and sleeps the game — football all the time.”

Bullock added: “Knox is like talking to another coach… I’ll be shocked if he’s not a future football coach.”

And beyond the mindset, Bullock says Annis has the arm talent to run Mandarin’s system.

“He’s got a magical arm so he can make any throw that he wants,” Bullock said.

The bye week means no opponent — but it doesn’t mean a pause. Annis says his focus is on work that doesn’t always show up on Friday nights.

“I just never want to… have the thought that someone’s working harder than me,” he said.

Bullock says the next step for Annis isn’t flashy — it’s discipline.

“Make the simple things simple,” Bullock said. “Don’t try to make the simple things hard… If he does that, he’ll be electric.”

Annis says the opportunity to be Mandarin’s quarterback carries weight — and pride.

“It’s special,” he said. “There’s nothing better than playing on Fridays with an ‘M’ on your chest.”
