TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace marked a major milestone Saturday, celebrating its 100th community bunk bed build day.
More than 100 volunteers from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, DISC Village, the Northside Kiwanis Club and other local organizations gathered at DISC Village to assemble 30 bunk beds- 60 beds in total.
These beds are for children who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor. Chapter President John Cousins said the work is needed for the community.
“Three percent of the population in the country are children without a bed,” Cousins said. “When you look at Leon County itself with over 300,000 people, that’s 10,000 beds just in Leon County, let alone the outside counties.”

Cousins said forty of those beds made on Saturday will be delivered to families the same day.
Since its founding eight years ago, the nonprofit has built more than 3,500 beds for kids across the area. Cousins added that the effort makes a direct impact on children’s well-being.
“We’ve heard it from all the social workers in the schools that they’re sleeping at their desks, they’re tired,” Cousins said. “Beds give them a place to sleep, a place of their own, and they do so much better in life.”
Sleep in Heavenly Peace continues to work toward its mission that “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” Families in need can apply for assistance at SHPbeds.org.
