Opening Kick

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team closes out its two-game road trip to the Sunshine State with a matchup against American Conference member South Florida, Sunday, Sept.  6. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and the game will be aired on ESPN+.

HL Preseason Poll

Youngstown State was picked to finish third in the 2026 Horizon League Preseason Poll. The Penguins accumulated 103 points, and Milwaukee was tabbed as the Horizon League preseason favorite with 142 points.

Youngstown State returns home to host Duquesne, Thursday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.

Tough Slate

Youngstown State Head Coach Rich Wall loaded up the non-league portion of the schedule for the second straight season with teams from the American, ACC, Big Ten, and SEC along with teams from the Atlantic-10, Atlantic Sun, Mid-American Conference, and the Patriot League.

Last Time Out

Youngstown State dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 21 Florida on Sept. 3.  Junior goalkeeper Kendall Sears faced 33 shots and tallied a career-high 11 saves against the nationally-ranked Gators. 

About South Florida

South Florida enters the game with an overall record of 1-4-0 and is coming off a 3-0 loss to Wake Forest on Sept. 3. Sophia Cabral leads the Bulls with two goals.

This is first meeting between Youngstown State and South Florida.

2026 Captains

The Youngstown State women’s soccer program has named seniors Emma Berdiner, Camille Bultel and Eva Sujevaric, and junior Leah Weiland as team captains for the 2026 season. Berdiner was named to the 2023 Horizon league All-Freshman Team. Bultel was named All-Horizon League Third-Team in 2025 after scoring four goals with four assists for a total of 16 points. Sunjevaric has appeared in 49 games during her career and scored a goal and has two career assists from her defender position. Weiland is in her third full season with the Penguins and she has two career assists.

Guins Have Experience

Youngstown State returns 19 letterwinners and six starters from last year’s squad that finished third in the Horizon League with a 6-2-2 conference mark, and the Penguins added 16 newcomers, including five transfers, for the upcoming campaign. 

Sears Nets Career High

Junior goalkeeper has been a steadying force in the net for the Penguins. Sears, who has 24 saves this season, tallied a career-high 11 saves against Florida on Sept. 3.

Air Autumn

Senior Autumn Fairfax scored her first goal as a Penguin to lift the Penguins to a 1-1 draw against Kent State on Aug. 20. After trailing 1-0 through much of the first half, fifth-year Elena Zuchowski lofted a free kick on the left side of the six and Fairfax elevated over the Golden Flashes defenders, and her header found the right corner of the net at the 40:28 mark. 

Haouzi Notches First Career Goal

Sophomore Ghita Haouzi scored her first career goal on her first career shot on goal in the Penguins’ 3-1 loss to Indiana on Aug. 16. Haouzi missed all of the 2025 season due to injury.

Scoring Threats Return

Last season, the Penguins posted the most goals scored (29), assists (24), and points (82) against an exclusively Division I schedule in program history. Youngstown State returns its top four scorers and 82.8 percent of its goals scored, 66.7 percent of its assists, and 78 percent of its total points scored from that squad.

Felder Among Scoring Leaders

Senior Sara Felder has scored 12 goals in 44 career games played and ranks tied for fifth on the Youngstown State all-time goals scored list. Felder is the eight Youngstown State player to score at least 12 goals in a career. She also has scored 27 total points and needs two more to move into a tie for 10th place.

Rosa Rising 

Sophomore Kamryn Rosa posted one of the best freshman campaigns in school history during the 2025 season. Rosa posted seven goals with two assists for 16 total points. Her seven goals were tied for the third most by a YSU freshman and the most since 2011. Rosa’s 16 points rank tied for third on the freshman list and are the most since 2010.
