FORT PIERCE — As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the Treasure Coast community is invited to gather Sept. 11 to remember and honor one of its own — CeCe Ross Lyles.
Lyles, a Fort Pierce native and former Fort Pierce police officer, was working as a flight attendant aboard United Airlines Flight 93 when the plane was hijacked and crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. She was among the 40 passengers and crew members killed that morning.
The commemorative wreath-laying ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Lyles’ memorial in Veterans Memorial Park, 600 N. Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce.
The 25th anniversary provides an especially poignant opportunity to reflect on Lyles’ life, her commitment to public service and the sacrifice she made on a day that forever changed the nation.
Community members, public safety personnel, veterans, civic leaders, friends and neighbors are encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will honor Lyles as well as the thousands of Americans who lost their lives in the attacks.
A quarter century later, the memories of Sept. 11 remain vivid for those who experienced that day. For younger generations who know the events primarily through history, commemorations such as this help preserve the stories of those who were lost and the courage and service they represented.
