Young singer-songwriter to release debut original singleJade Imani is pictured performing at the Miami Beach Youth Music Festival.

Jade Imani, a 15-year-old Miami singer-songwriter and student at New World School of the Arts, is preparing to release her debut original single, Free, on Sept. 18.

Free is a pop-country song about independence and finding the confidence to choose your own path.

“It feels a little crazy knowing that my first original song is finally going to be released,” Jade said. “This is the first song I’ve ever written, and I’m very proud of it.”

Jade wrote the lyrics and melody, and she, along with her family, have been working to independently bring the record from the studio through production and release, according to Paul Tolliver, her father and manager.

“When I wrote Free, I was thinking about how relationships, whether friendships or just people you know, can feel heavy when people expect you to act or be a certain way. Sometimes you feel like you can’t always be yourself, like you have to dim your light,” Jade said.

“I want people to feel like they can finally be released from other people’s expectations and just be themselves. The song is supposed to feel liberating, like you’re finally free from what was holding you down before.”

Jade, who was born in New York City, has grown as a young artist here in Miami, beginning to sing in church at age 11 and performing at a number of local venues and events.

This year, Jade was an individual vocal finalist in the Young Talent Big Dreams competition, where she performed Numb by Linkin Park. She also has performed at several events around South Florida, including the Miami Beach Youth Music Festival and The Children’s Trust Family Expo.

During the summer, Jade attended Grammy Camp as well as Juilliard Summer Performing Arts in Voice. Her musical influences span several genres and generations, and include Lauryn Hill, Shakira, Stevie Nicks, Ella Langley, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Becky G and Paramore.

“What I love most about singing is that I get to express myself and say things that words sometimes can’t,” Jade said. “It’s also a form of releasing what I feel. And what I love most about performing is being able to connect with my audience and make them feel something.”
