TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Flooding risks can rise quickly when stormwater systems are blocked, and city officials are asking residents to help keep drainage conveyances clear as part of ongoing flood damage mitigation and management efforts.

The city is urging people not to dump or throw anything into drainage conveyances such as streams, ditches and inlets, noting that doing so is a violation of city code. Officials said even grass clippings and branches can build up and obstruct downstream channels or pipes, reducing the system’s ability to function as designed.

The city’s Stormwater Conveyance Maintenance Program removes obstructions including debris, trees and other materials. Residents who observe an obstruction in a public drainage conveyance are asked to call the city at 850-891-4968.

People who witness illicit dumping of debris into drainage conveyances are also asked to call the city at 850-891-4968. Those who live outside city limits should call Leon County at 850-606-1300.
