“Later on this evening, it’s probably going to be bad because folks are going to be trying to get back to their homes. But, basically, I just take my time and go with the flow,” she said. “You hit an accident here and there and you have to stop. I can deal with it. Out of 40 years, I’m good.”
Several people traveled from surrounding states, including a woman from just down the interstate in Jacksonville.
Yolanda Thompson said she doesn’t always plan where she’ll get gas, but she does try to go to stores that offer rewards or discounts.
“Jacksonville was like $4.39, because I use premium. Here, it’s $4.70. In Mississippi, it was like $4.20. So, it was a little cheaper there,” Thompson said. “I also do Wawa because you get like 0.15 cents off or 0.25 off if you purchase things there. Sam’s, BJ’s. Yeah, I always try to save gas.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that out of all the people working on Labor Day, most of them are in retail, hospitality, healthcare, or public service.
Drivers are urged to use caution as they head back home.
AAA reported more than 400,000 roadside assistance calls during Labor Day last year.
