TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida State University officials are addressing Monday’s stadium power outage that delayed the Noles’ game nearly two hours.
The outage was due to the failure of a 1200-amp main breaker at University Center C (UCC), according to the university.
The breaker failure resulted in a widespread power outage that impacted HVAC systems communications infrastructure and associated building systems with UCC, the university said.
While crews worked to restore power, they determined an underlying electrical fault within the switchgear system caused the breaker to fail “beyond repair,” according to FSU.
“The breaker could not be safely restored to service and the associated electrical gear sustained damaged requiring complete replacement,” a Tuesday statement read.
A video circulating on social media claimed the outage stemmed from a car crashing into a power box.
Officials say that video shows an old incident and is unrelated to Monday’s outage.
FSU electrical staff were able to modify the electrical distribution to restore essential services.
Monday’s game against SMU kicked off at 9:15 p.m., hours after the original 7:30 p.m. start time.
The power outage is still impacting UCC, the university said. Classes held in that building are being held remotely.
“Our Facilities teams remain focused on business continuity and restoration efforts,” the statement read. “The electrical system in the UCC building must be rebuilt. As that process continued, a generator is enroute and will be installed so that there may be continuity of operations for classes and offices in UCC.”
The university said no other buildings or student housing complexes were impacted by the outage.
