A 3-alarm fire, reportedly sparked by lightning, set a blaze at St. Pete Catholic High School’s gym roof, with no injuries reported.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — More than 40 fire units responded to a 3-alarm fire at St. Petersburg Catholic High School, fire crews confirmed to 10 Tampa Bay News.
At about 3:54 p.m. Tuesday, a fire was reported at the school located near the Eagle Crest and Garden Manor neighborhoods on 9th Avenue N. According to St. Pete Fire Rescue, “more than 80 first responders” were on the scene.
A spokesperson with the Diocese of St. Petersburg, as well as an eyewitness told 10 Tampa Bay News that a lightning strike sparked the fire at the high school. The fire went to a 3rd alarm at 4:43 p.m. as St. Pete Fire Rescue crews got assistance from other municipalities. Flames were seen in the roof of the school gymnasium, where crews were working.
Steven Sims, a neighbor who witnessed the incident after lightning struck, told 10 Tampa Bay News that he saw smoke and flames coming from the roof. Sims explained that there was “a huge boom,” adding that a lightning strike around the time of the incident also took out power to his house.
“It was really crazy,” Sims told 10 Tampa Bay News after describing a scene of student athletes and school staff being evacuated while the roof had smoke and fire coming out. “It’s really unexpected and really unfortunate.”
The Diocese noted that the gym was struck by lightning in a social media post, adding that smoke was seen coming from the roof of the gym.
A spokesperson from the Diocese outside the school told 10 Tampa Bay News that the damage was contained mostly to the roof, thanks to the fire crews. She noted that there was also some water in the building.
“At the time, the junior varsity volleyball team was playing; they were practicing,” the spokesperson said. “When the lightning struck, they were able to evacuate the building. No injuries, everyone was safe. And this did occur after school.”
No injuries have been reported, fire officials confirmed to 10 Tampa Bay News. Everyone is accounted for, and all students and staff were evacuated, the Diocese confirmed.
“Students may be picked up in front of the school. St. Petersburg Catholic High School will send updates when available,” the Diocese added on social media.
