FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Gas prices spiked in September across Southwest Florida, leaving drivers doing a double take at the pump.

Regular gas at a RaceTrac on U.S. 41 in Fort Myers was $4.19 a gallon. AAA’s numbers show the average in Fort Myers and Cape Coral is now $4.11 a gallon.

That’s up about 24 cents just since Tuesday. Statewide, the average jumped about 18 cents overnight—from $3.90 to $4.08 a gallon.

AAA said this is a time of year when drivers would normally start to see some relief at the pump as summer travel slows down. But continued tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to global oil supplies are keeping prices volatile.

“When it comes to gas prices, they’ve been hovering around the same level for the past couple of months. People are kind of expecting to pay more at the pump,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA Auto Club.
