FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBS12) — JetBlue has launched eight new nonstop routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and plans to add six more later this year as part of what the airline calls its largest-ever schedule at FLL.
The expansion brings daily service between Fort Lauderdale and Baltimore, Charlotte, Cleveland, Nashville, Detroit, Houston, Chicago and Ponce, Puerto Rico, according to JetBlue’s announcement.
JetBlue said it now operates more than 125 daily departures to more than 55 nonstop destinations from Fort Lauderdale. The airline expects to grow to about 150 daily flights from FLL this winter.
More new routes are scheduled to begin in the coming months, including daily service to Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio, starting Nov. 2. A daily Fort Lauderdale-San Diego route is set to begin Nov. 19, featuring JetBlue’s Mint premium service.
JetBlue also plans to launch daily flights to Barranquilla, Colombia, on Oct. 1 and Cali, Colombia, on Oct. 15, subject to government approval. Service to Caracas, Venezuela, is also planned, though JetBlue has not announced a start date.
The airline said its daily departures from Fort Lauderdale were up more than 75% compared with the same time last year, with 24 additional nonstop destinations added since December.
The expansion comes after Spirit Airlines, which had long operated a major hub at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, shut down operations in May following bankruptcy. Spirit’s closure eliminated thousands of jobs at FLL and left a gap in the airport’s low-fare service, particularly on routes connecting South Florida with domestic cities, the Caribbean and Latin America. JetBlue’s new flights add capacity at the airport, though the airline operates a different route network and fare model than Spirit did.

The expansion gives South Florida travelers more options across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, while adding more premium transcontinental service. JetBlue said its winter Mint expansion will also include additional flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The airline said its San Diego route will offer the only lie-flat product between Fort Lauderdale and San Diego.
Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen called the new domestic and international routes “great news,” citing the potential economic impact of increased airport operations.
