St. Petersburg, FL – Authorities are investigating after a man’s body was recovered from the water near the St. Pete Pier in downtown St. Petersburg.

Someone spotted the body floating near the pier shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday and notified authorities, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Members of the department’s Marine Patrol Unit responded to the waterfront and removed the man from the water.

Officers then brought his body to the nearby marina.

Police have not disclosed where the man was found in relation to the pier or how long his body may have been in the water.

Authorities also have not released his name, age, physical description or place of residence.

Detectives are working to identify the man and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an examination to establish the cause and manner of death.

Investigators have not announced any evidence of foul play or described the death as suspicious.

Police have not said whether witnesses saw the man enter the water or whether officers recovered personal belongings from the surrounding area.

No suspect has been identified, no arrest has been made and no criminal allegations have been reported.

The case remains classified as an active death investigation while detectives gather evidence and await the medical examiner’s findings.

Police did not announce whether the recovery affected public operations at the pier, marina or nearby waterfront businesses.

The St. Pete Pier extends into Tampa Bay from downtown St. Petersburg and includes restaurants, fishing areas, recreational spaces and other public attractions.

Authorities said additional information will be released as the investigation develops.

Machado Rivera and the victim reportedly live in separate sections of a split trailer home on the property. Police records state that Machado Rivera approached the victim’s door and began aggressively banging on it.
