Dead Manatee Found Near Ben T. Davis Beach in Tampa | NewsRadio WFLA

Tampa, FL – A dead manatee found near a Tampa beach during Labor Day weekend is being examined by wildlife officials.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit responded Sunday morning after receiving a report of a deceased manatee in the water near Ben T. Davis Beach.

Deputies located the animal offshore and coordinated with an officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The marine unit helped move the manatee to shore, allowing wildlife personnel to recover the remains and begin investigating the death.

Authorities did not immediately release information about the manatee’s age, sex or physical condition.

The cause of death had not been determined. Wildlife officials may examine the remains for signs of a boat strike, illness, entanglement or other trauma.

The discovery occurred during Labor Day weekend, when recreational boating activity typically increases on Florida waterways.

State officials advise boat operators to follow posted speed limits, remain alert in shallow water and watch for circular patterns that can indicate a submerged manatee.

Florida manatees are protected under state and federal law.

Watercraft collisions remain a significant cause of injuries and deaths, but officials had not linked this case to a vessel strike.

Preliminary FWC data documented 469 manatee deaths across Florida between January 1st and September 4th, 2026.

The totals remain subject to revision as additional deaths are reported and necropsy findings become available.

The FWC asks people not to touch or move injured, distressed or dead manatees.

Sightings should be reported to the agency’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922. Information collected during carcass recoveries helps biologists monitor threats and identify mortality patterns statewide.
