WINTER PARK, Fla. – Orange County Public Schools is reviewing a postgame incident involving Lake Nona football players and an adult after Winter Park High School defeated Lake Nona in overtime on Friday, following a video circulating on social media that appears to show the aftermath of a heated exchange.
The video, which has been viewed widely online, shows several Lake Nona players gathered around an adult as others step in between them.
The recording does not show what happened before the confrontation began.
The father of one Lake Nona player told News 6 he did not want to appear on camera but shared what his son told him happened on the field.
According to the father, his son saw a Winter Park coach spit on another Lake Nona player, who is his friend, and then stepped in.The father said that is where the video begins, just before the adult is walked away by another staff member.
Winter Park had just beaten Lake Nona in overtime at Winter Park High School when the incident occurred. The father said he believes tensions between the teams may have started before the game because, he said, four players had left Winter Park to play for Lake Nona High School.
News 6 received the following statement from the school district.
“The district is aware of a verbal exchange involving a non-faculty coach from Winter Park High School. The matter has been reported to the Office of Professional Standards and is currently under review.”
OCPS
The district also said the coach involved is not an OCPS employee but was expected to meet with Winter Park High School leaders Tuesday afternoon.
News 6 has asked the district for an update after that meeting and whether the coach will be allowed to attend practices or games while the review continues.
