Volunteers needed for UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County
SARASOTA — The UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County is seeking volunteers to help with its Ecology and Natural Resources programs.
“The ecology and natural resources program reaches thousands of youth and adults across Sarasota County each year through engaging field and classroom-based education programs,” it stated in a news release.
It noted research shows volunteering “improves physical activity, self-reported wellness and mood” when it comes to being in the environment.
“Volunteering in nature with UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County offers an opportunity to make friends and build community with others who have similar values and interests while increasing your knowledge and skills,” it stated.

EcoWalks, forest bathing walks setENGLEWOOD — Returning soon are EcoWalks that take place throughout Sarasota County.
“EcoWalks are guided interpretive walks through a Sarasota County park or preserve,” according to a county news release. “EcoWalks are awesome opportunities to learn more about the unique ecology of Sarasota County.”
EcoWalks take place in Sarasota, Englewood, Venice and North Port.
“Forest Bathing walks offer participants the opportunity to practice mindfulness, breathwork, and use all of their senses to connect with nature,” it stated.

Take a Child Outside set for Sept. 26
VENICE — Sarasota County will celebrate National Public Lands Day from 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Shamrock Park.
It will be “the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands,” according to a news release from the county.
“Volunteers of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in various activities, including litter pick-up, nuisance plant removal, native vegetation planting and mulching,” the news release stated.
After that, everyone will have a chance to enjoy the nature.
“Celebrate Take a Child Outside Week and explore Shamrock Park as you learn about the park’s ecology and how your hard work benefits this ecosystem with family-friendly activities,” it stated.

Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz set
PORT CHARLOTTE — Charlotte County Parks & Natural Resources hosts the Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz event from 9 -11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, at Centennial Park Recreation Center, at 1120 Centennial Blvd., Port Charlotte.
“Bees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators do more than brighten our parks—they help sustain the natural world around us,” it stated in a news release. “This free, family-friendly event will celebrate the vital role pollinators play in healthy ecosystems while encouraging residents of all ages to explore nature, learn about local wildlife and discover simple ways to support conservation at home.”
There will be interactive educational exhibits on pollinators and native plants, wildlife conservation along with sustainability and environmental stewardship, it stated.
“Charlotte County Parks & Natural Resources is seeking nonprofit organizations, schools, environmental groups, and educational exhibitors to help bring the experience to life,” it stated. “Vendor participation is free. This event is intended for educational and community outreach purposes only.”

Kayak launch improvements underway
PORT CHARLOTTE — Officials announced improvements are underway to the natural kayak launch at Tippecanoe Environmental Park.
The completion date was set for Aug. 31. Originally, it was anticipated to be opened July 20.
“The kayak launch will be closed during this time,” it stated. “The remainder of the park will remain open.”

How to grow vegetables in Southwest Florida
PORT CHARLOTTE — Just because the environment is a bit harsh doesn’t mean vegetables can’t be grown in Southwest Florida.
The UF/IFAS Extension Charlotte County Master Gardener volunteers is holding a workshop on how to “make the most of Southwest Florida’s fall growing season at the Vegetable Gardening in Southwest Florida.”
It takes place at two upcoming events.
From 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 12 at at Mid-County Regional Library, 4050 Forest Nelson Blvd., Port Charlotte.
From 10 a.m.-noon, Friday, Sept. 18 at at Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park Recreation Cente, 6961 San Casa Drive, Englewood.
“Presented by UF/IFAS Extension Charlotte County Master Gardener Volunteers, the workshop will provide practical tips to help participants get their fall vegetable gardens off to a great start,” it stated.

FREE GUIDED NATURE WALK
CHARLOTTE HARBOR — The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center and the Charlotte County Natural Resource Department will be conducting free guided nature walks.
All events begin at 8 a.m.
On these casual walks with CHEC volunteers, you will search for and learn about the things that live in Charlotte County’s wild places. Prepare for each walk with plenty of water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and clothing that will protect from insects and plants. Advance registration is required. Cedar Point holds wading trip
ENGLEWOOD — Public wading trips are set through Cedar Point Environmental Park.
“On these guided programs with local experts, you’ll experience a short, guided hike through various ecosystems of the park, and then you will get to wade into the shallow waters of Lemon Bay and use dip nets to sample all the incredible wildlife that lives within the seagrass flats. Prepare for each trip with plenty of water, insect repellent, reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or avobenzone), and clothing comfortable both for hiking and being in the water.”
Currently, a dozen people are allowed per trip with waiting lists created.
