INDIAN ROCKS BEACH, Fla. — Indian Rocks Beach commissioners voted Tuesday to ban smoking and vaping on the beach, citing concerns about secondhand smoke and cigarette butt litter on the shoreline.
The new prohibition applies to cigarettes and vapes on the sand. City officials said the goal is to reduce secondhand smoke for other beachgoers and eliminate cigarette butt litter along the beach.
Anyone found repeatedly violating the ban could face a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail.
Indian Rocks Beach joins Clearwater, Treasure Island and Gulfport in implementing smoking bans on the beach.
