Florida set to carry out its 15th execution this year
In 1996, Daniel Conahan Jr. was convicted of the first-degree murder and kidnapping of 21-year-old Richard Montgomery in Charlotte County. The jury unanimously recommended the death sentence. Now 72 years old, he is set to face the death penalty tonight.
Pinellas County Schools closed two campuses this year, and more closures could still be coming
The initiative, Planning for Progress, identifies which schools can be consolidated due to differing enrollment demographics and underutilization. Following the decline of enrollment in elementary schools, the next list of consolidations is set for September 10th.
Another piece of the Historic Jackson House in Tampa collapsed yesterday
City leaders say the structure urgently needs to be preserved to prevent total loss of one of Tampa’s most significant Black landmarks. The Jackson House Foundation said that zoning, permits and historic preservation regulations have held up progress on the deteriorating building. The city said its chief building official has cleared the way for emergency repair work.
The Florida Realtors trade group is throwing its weight behind Amendment 3
The major property tax cut referendum on the November ballot is backed by the trade group following the $10 million donation to the political committee, “Yes On 3”, last week. Many local government officials, especially from rural areas and small towns, have spoken out against the amendment, saying it would undercut their ability to provide basic services.
