For most, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is a daytime place: jogs through the park, bicycle rides, visits to The Cleat or Lighthouse climbs. From 7-9 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 19, The Friends of Cape Florida are keeping the adventure going after sunset as they invite the community to experience Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in an entirely different way.

The shoreline near Pavilion D-18 will become Key Biscayne’s gathering place for International Observe the Moon Night, a worldwide NASA initiation to celebrate lunar science, exploration and the many cultural and personal connections we share with the moon.

The FREE community event will combine telescopes to watch the moon, music, poetry, science, art (night painting, get a moon tattoo), nature and sunset views, but the most interesting part may be what you and our neighbors bring to the evening: Residents and Key Biscayne organizations are being invited to answer one simple question: What does the Moon have to do with what you do?

The answers may surprise you. Boaters can explore how the moon influences tides and how sailors once navigated by the night sky. Gardeners can examine centuries-old traditions of planting by lunar cycles. Wildlife experts can introduce the creatures that emerge after sunset. Musicians, poets and filmmakers can show how the moon has inspired generations of artists. Jewish community members can share insights how lunar cycles help determine the rhythm of the Jewish calendar.

Each participating organization will have five minutes to share its own “Moon Connection”— a story, demonstration, performance, experiment or unexpected discovery. It is also a rare opportunity to simply enjoy the “Park After Dark.” Watch the sunset, look through a telescope, stroll beneath the palms and enjoy a sunset Cape Florida Lighthouse climb against the evening sky. Join us for this FREE COMMUNITY EVENT. Bring your appetite and enjoy a Nimbuya “Juicy Lucy” burger or Kona Ice treats.

The Friends of Cape Florida works to protect and enhance the park’s natural and cultural resources while creating opportunities for learning, recreation and connection. International Observe the Moon Night brings all three together.

Come curious. Bring the kids. Bring your organization. Bring your imagination.

UNDER ONE MOON. ONE COMMUNITY. TOGETHER.
