TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A new senior center in Tallahassee is set to open its doors with expanded options for lifelong learning, wellness, fitness, art and music for the community’s growing population of active adults.

The City of Tallahassee will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the opening of the city’s second Tallahassee Senior Center, a 40,000-square-foot facility at 2743 Welaunee Blvd. Refreshments will be available, and attendees will be able to tour the building immediately after the ceremony.

Designed for active adults ages 50 and older, the new center includes a double-size multipurpose gym with six indoor pickleball courts and two basketball and volleyball courts. The space will also accommodate table tennis and fitness classes. A Lifelong Learning wing will offer educational classes, art programs, cards and other games, along with health and wellness opportunities.

“Opening the second Tallahassee Senior Center is a testament to the City’s commitment to transformative projects that enhance the well-being of our community,” Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey said. “The additional center will allow the City to better serve the growing senior population and the need for expanded programs for current and future residents.”

Tallahassee Senior Services has operated primarily from the historic Armory building on North Monroe Street since 1978. The building, constructed in 1935 to accommodate military troops, now hosts a wide range of activities and is described as nearly out of space with classes, games, concerts and more. Between the North Monroe Street location and 14 neighborhood sites, staff and volunteers coordinate nearly 200 activities each month and host programs serving about 500 seniors a day.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome the community through the doors of Tallahassee’s second senior center. This beautiful building will be a place where friendships grow as seniors stay active, engaged and connected,” Senior Services Manager Ceola Grant said. “We know the profound impact that investing in projects like this has on our community’s quality of life and appreciate everyone that helped get us to this point.”

Like the original Tallahassee Senior Center on North Monroe Street, the Welaunee Boulevard center will be available for the entire community to enjoy. Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Schedule information for both centers will be posted online at https://bit.ly/46DPEhf and shared weekly in the Tallahassee Senior Services newsletter.
