TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The price of diesel hit a new record high in Florida Monday, with AAA reporting the average price is now $6.31 cents a gallon.
“It’s super high, super high,” said trucker Marty Griffin as he filled up at a Midway truck stop Monday morning. The price at that pump was $6.09 a gallon.
“You’ve got to work no matter what. You’ve got to work,” he said as the pump rolled past $665.
His rig has two gas tanks, one on each side, which hold a total of 250 gallons of diesel.
The Florida Trucking Association says prices are up more than 70% over this time last year. AAA shows diesel prices jumping from $3.54 a gallon this time last year to $6.31 now.
“On an average day’s work, which is around 500 miles, they’re consuming anywhere from 60 to 70 gallons of fuel per day just for that day of work. That translates to about $450 to $500 of expense per day,” Florida Trucking Association President Scott Perry said. “That 70 percent increase year over year translates to about $200 per day of additional expense that they didn’t have a year ago. On a 50 truck fleet, that’s over $3 million a year, and that’s extraordinary.”
Perry says fuel has now surpassed wages as the number one cost for many trucking companies.
The association’s website says “Everything you eat, wear and use was on a truck an average of four times before you purchased it.”
“Everything you can think of that’s on the shelves of retailers today is generally transported by truck,” Perry said. “Those are the things that are being impacted by the increase in costs from diesel that will ultimately be get passed down to consumers in some shape, form or fashion.”
