TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County Commissioners had a busy night Tuesday, deciding on public safety technology, school zone cameras, a potential data center moratorium and more.
Commissioners unanimously approved stopping the use of automated license plate readers on county property and beginning the removal process.
That gives both Flock and Vigilant 30 days to remove their cameras from Leon County property.
Christian Caban, Chairman of the Leon County Commission, said the county took a strong stance against Flock cameras.
“I am very excited to share that I believe Leon County just took one of the most aggressive stances against Flock cameras in the state of Florida from a local government,” Caban said.
Commissioners also unanimously approved not moving forward with the school zone detection and enforcement program.
“With some of these AI speed zone cameras, you’re guilty until proven yourself innocent. I think that’s wrong, and so I’m really proud of the direction that the county commission just took, which is to pretty much pause and to not accept any of the bids,” Caban said.
Another big item Tuesday night was a $16 million grant for the North Monroe safety improvement project.
Commissioners say the project has been three years in the making.
“I want to thank all the folks who were involved. It’s incredible how the community has just kind of contributed in very different ways to make sure we got this money for badly needed safety improvement on North Monroe,” Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor said.

Commissioners also approved consideration of a Leon County tourism program aimed at promoting partnerships with local colleges and universities to host large marquee events.
The program comes with big hopes for tourism following a record year.
“I would anticipate, based again on the proof of concept from last year between the Savannah Bananas and the rodeo thing, the sky is the limit with the renovated stadiums, and so I think this is a smart move from a public policy standpoint,” Leon County Commissioner Brian Welch said.
Commissioners held the first of two public hearings to adopt an 18-month moratorium on large-scale data centers.
Commissioners were supportive of moving forward and plan to have the second and final public hearing on Oct. 13.
Commissioners also heard a status update on the Justice Information System incident following the county’s botched systems switch.
County Administrator Vincent Long addressed reports of other jurisdictions experiencing issues with the same vendor’s software.
“We are aware of public reports that other jurisdictions have experienced problems with this vendor’s software, especially of late. Including one that saw instability during the same weeks as we did and returned to their prior system, our discussion or our decisions will rest on our own facts.”
Commissioners also approved a workshop date on fire rescue services for Oct. 20 at 3 p.m.
