Florida Memorial University and Florida A&M University are establishing a new pathway designed to help qualified FMU students pursue doctoral education at FAMU, the universities announced last week.
The institutions, both historically Black universities, have signed a Ph.D. Pathways Memorandum of Understanding that creates a structured opportunity for FMU students to learn about and prepare for doctoral programs at FAMU. The partnership is intended to strengthen the pipeline of scholars, researchers, educators and leaders.
Under the agreement, participating FMU students will receive enhanced access to academic advising, faculty mentorship and research opportunities, as well as information about FAMU’s graduate programs and guidance through the doctoral application process.
“This partnership is about opening doors—and then building a bridge strong enough for our students to walk across,” said Florida Memorial University President William C. McCormick, Jr. in a press release. “Our students have the talent, determination, and intellectual capacity to excel at the highest levels of education. Through this partnership with Florida A&M University, we are creating a pathway that connects that talent to doctoral education, research, and opportunities to lead.”
The agreement connects undergraduate education at FMU with research experiences and advanced academic opportunities at FAMU. The universities said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to advanced education and developing highly educated professionals who can contribute to Florida and communities nationwide.
“This partnership demonstrates what is possible when institutions with shared missions work together to create intentional opportunities for student achievement and academic excellence,” McCormick said.
FAMU President Marva B. Johnson said the agreement is intended not only to create opportunities for students to pursue advanced degrees but also to provide an environment where they can succeed.
“Florida Memorial University and Florida A&M University are doing this work together — preparing scholars and seeing them through to the advanced degree,” Johnson said. “Our faculty, our laboratories, and our graduate programs are ready to welcome these students, and I look forward to seeing their names on the research, discoveries and in the professions that will shape the future.”
Founded in 1879, Florida Memorial University is South Florida’s only historically Black college or university and is located in Miami Gardens. The university offers more than 30 undergraduate and graduate programs spanning STEM, education, social sciences, arts and humanities, business and aeronautical science.
Founded in 1887, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is Florida’s only public historically Black university and an 1890 land-grant institution. FAMU is a doctoral research university offering more than 50 graduate degree programs and 12 doctoral degrees in fields including engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, public health, environmental science, education and the sciences.
