MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — A young girl has made a full recovery just days after almost drowning in a pool in Pinellas County — and her family made sure to deliver the news to the first responders who helped her that day.

When the Madeira Beach Fire Department responded to the drowning emergency on Sept. 13, the young girl had already been removed from the water by her older sibling, as well as a retired firefighter who happened to be nearby.

That retired firefighter immediately started providing medical care prior to crews arriving. Upon their arrival, they quickly assessed the girl, treated her for water inhalation and transported her to a local hospital for further treatment and monitoring.

On Wednesday, the young girl and her family stopped by to see the Madeira Beach firefighters who helped make the recovery possible.

The family shared that the girl had removed her life jacket and entered the pool after her sister. First responders say the quick actions of her sister and the retired firefighter were critical and made a life-saving difference.

“They came with the best news possible,” the fire department wrote. “Today was a reminder of why we do what we do. After responding to an emergency, there is nothing better for our crews than getting to see the patient recovered and healthy.”
