Key Biscayne families can learn about international summer programs for children and teenagers during a community presentation Saturday, Sept. 19.
CISV Miami will host the event from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Community Room at the Key Biscayne Police Station, in Village Hall at 88 W McIntyre St. The presentation is intended for parents and children ages 10 and older.
Attendees will learn about CISV’s international programs, the ages they serve, what participants can expect and how families can become involved through the Miami chapter. CISV Miami also offers local activities, service projects and leadership opportunities during the year.
The organization’s international programs combine camp activities, discussions and daily interaction among young people from different countries and cultures.
“CISV gives children the opportunity to discover the world through friendships,” said CISV Miami board member Camila Bonfiglioli. “They learn that even when we come from different countries, speak different languages or have different traditions, we have much more in common than we realize.”
Bonfiglioli began participating in CISV activities when she was 10 years old in Brazil. Her three children now participate through the Miami chapter.
Child psychologist Dr. Doris Allen developed the idea for CISV after World War II, believing that bringing children from different cultures together could encourage lasting understanding. The first international “Village” program was held in Cincinnati in 1951.

CISV now operates through chapters around the world, offering international camps and local programs based on experiential, or “learning by doing,” education. Its programs address diversity, human rights, conflict resolution and sustainable development.
