PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A 42-year-old travel MRI technician was arrested after Port St. Lucie police said a patient reported she was sexually assaulted while undergoing an MRI at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital.

Gabriel Cruz was arrested in Brevard County on the evening of Sept. 16 on a charge of sexual battery involving a physically helpless or incapacitated victim, a first-degree felony, police said.

The investigation began Sept. 14 after hospital staff reported that a 64-year-old female patient said she had been sexually assaulted during an MRI the day before at the hospital, 1800 SE Tiffany Ave.

Police said the woman had been admitted for medical treatment and was given medication before the MRI that left her significantly drowsy.

Detectives identified Cruz as the technician assigned to the procedure. With the hospital’s assistance, investigators obtained video that police said showed Cruz leaving the MRI room after the patient and disposing of materials.

Those materials were recovered and tested, returning presumptive positive results for male semen, according to police.

Cruz had worked at the hospital as a travel MRI technician since Aug. 24 and was hired through a third-party agency, police said.

The investigation remains active. HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital has cooperated with investigators, police said.
