Crews respond to hazmat incident at Port Tampa Bay

Tampa Fire Rescue said a fire at Gulf Sulphur caused hydrogen sulfide, a respiratory irritant with a pungent odor, to be released from a tank.

TAMPA, Fla. — Crews responded to a hazmat incident at Port Tampa Bay on Friday night. 

Tampa Fire Rescue said a fire at Gulf Sulphur caused hydrogen sulfide, a respiratory irritant with a pungent odor, to be released from a tank. 

Out of an abundance of caution, Sparkman Channel remains closed to recreational vessels. All of Harbor Island was under a shelter-in-place, but the order has since been lifted.

The original fire is under control, and crews will remain on scene until it is mitigated.
