MIAMI– On the heels of 12 total blocks and three sets hitting over .300, FIU volleyball (9-4) earned its seventh consecutive win and clinched a perfect 305 Classic, taking down Jacksonville (6-5) in straight sets. The seventh consecutive win is FIU’s longest streak since 2011.
Jacksonville started strong in a run-and-gun first set, as FIU did not find its footing until after the media timeout. Trailing 15-12, the block got going in a 5-0 run for a 17-15 lead. Teodora Skocajic combined for a pair and Mariana Silva added her ninth ace of the weekend to put the Panthers in control early, a lead they held on to. A couple of Dolphins errors and some kills from Lana Sesar pushed the Panthers to a 25-18 set win.
A 7-1 spread to start spelled a strong rest of the set, a second straight where FIU hit .345. Gina Fedrigo had two kills and two block assists, and FIU was up 13-5 after an Ivona Lazovic service ace. Jacksonville found a late 4-0 run but had too big of a hole to climb out of, as a Jillian Huckabey kill and a bad set closed a decisive 25-17 win.
Up 20-15 after a Chiara Fabbrini booking, FIU struggled to shut down the Dolphins’ offense and hung on for dear life. Tied 24-24 after JU forced extra points, Sesar and Fabbrini made sure the set would not extend any further, finishing off the sweep 26-24.
FIU’s last seven-game winning streak came 14 years ago from Sept. 4-25, which also included a sweep of Jacksonville on Sept. 16 in Orlando.
Sesar had a great bounce-back effort with 10 kills to lead the way, but it was the blocking that really shined on the defensive side. Rayne Williams tied her career-high with six, while Fedrigo (5) and Skocajic (5) both finished right behind her. It was the team’s second time reaching 12 blocks in a match, the only other being the five-set win over Louisiana on Sept. 12.
