For a few minutes, Revolution defender Peyton Miller was guilty.
The 18-year-old was caught with his arm extended at the edge of the penalty area late in the second half, Joran Gerbet’s shot deflected off his hand, and Martín Ojeda fired home a penalty kick to tie the score in the 88th minute.
He didn’t have to hang his head long.
In the third minute of stoppage time, Ilay Feingold sent Miller in on goal with a perfectly-weighted through ball and Miller didn’t miss, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner for his second goal of the game in an eventual 4-2 victory over Orlando City on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
The Revolution captured their third straight win with the victory and improved to 9-2-2 at home. They moved one point ahead of Inter Miami for second place in the Eastern Conference, though Lionel Messi’s club has played one fewer game.
Get Starting Point
A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.
Miller, the West Hartford, Conn., native who earned his first ever call-up to the US men’s national team on Thursday, had scored in the 59th minute as well on a breakaway to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Carles Gil opened the scoring in the 19th minute on a shot that deflected over goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau’s head and into the back of the net.
But Orlando City fought back after Miller’s first goal. Iván Angulo scored in his third straight MLS game after Ojeda set him up. And after Ojeda equalized from the spot, the Lions looked like they had earned a draw.
But Miller’s heroics, followed by an insurance tally from Gil in the sixth minute of stoppage time, were enough to help the Revolution earn all three points.
Miller has three goals in his last two games, including the deciding goal in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Fire. Gil leads the Revolution with 12 goals after earning his first brace of the season. Dor Turgeman, who had two primary assists, now leads the team with seven in MLS competition.
New England outshot Orlando City, 16-7, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on target. It also had 55 percent of the possession and earned 10 corner kicks compared to Orlando City’s two.
Next up for the Revolution is a road contest with Real Salt Lake next Saturday. They’ll be in search of their first four-game winning streak in MLS play since April 12-May 3 of last season.
