PALM CITY, Fla. (CBS12) — 38-year-old Darrel Abbey is facing multiple charges after Martin County deputies say he barricaded himself inside a Palm City guest house during an hours-long standoff with law enforcement Saturday.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Abbey was taken into custody after SWAT officers and hostage negotiators spent hours trying to convince him to surrender.

Deputies said they were initially called to a home along SW Bessey Creek Trail near Murphy Road for a domestic-related incident. Investigators say the situation escalated when Abbey, who deputies say was armed and dangerous and under the influence of alcohol, barricaded himself inside a guest house on the property.

“I was pretty scared because it doesn’t usually happen in our neighborhood,” said 11-year-old Gavin Ryan, who lives next door.

Ryan’s mother said deputies asked her to evacuate after she heard several gunshots coming from her neighbor’s yard. SWAT officers later positioned themselves near her home as the standoff unfolded.

Deputies said hostage negotiators worked throughout the afternoon to get Abbey to come out peacefully. He eventually surrendered without incident and no injuries were reported.

Another neighbor, Julian Tracy, said he was shocked to learn what was happening.

“[Gavin’s] mom told me about it, and I was like, ‘Whoa,’ Tracy said. “I’ve never heard about a shooting in someone’s neighborhood.”

Abbey was booked into the Martin County Jail and is facing three charges, including felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Jail records show he is being held on a $12,500 bond.
