During the operation, dispatch received a report of a reckless driver traveling on Chiquita Boulevard. Officers were alerted to the vehicle description and began checking the area but were unable to locate the vehicle, according to the report.

Moments later, dispatch received a report of a traffic crash involving a vehicle that had entered a canal near the 2900 block of SW 17th Avenue. The vehicle description matched the one provided in the earlier reckless driving call.

Cape Coral firefighters responded Friday night to a partially submerged truck in a canal in the 1700 block of Southwest 29th Street. According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, the driver was already out of the vehicle when crews arrived. Divers searched the canal to confirm no one else was inside.

A witness at the crash scene reported seeing Carson Michael Williams behind the wheel of the vehicle, according to the report. An officer was able to safely remove Williams from the vehicle, according to the report.

As officers conducted their investigation, they observed multiple indicators of impairment, including bloodshot and watery eyes, a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech. Williams was asked to participate in standardized field sobriety exercises.

Based on the press release by the Cape Coral Police Department, Williams was arrested and charged with DUI and DUI Property Damage. He provided two breath samples, which registered .218% and .205%, according to police.

Williams was later transported to the Lee County Jail. He bonded out on Sept. 20 with bond set at $3,500.
