Grey is back, “Tampa Bay” is back, the gradient is back, and yes, even the devil ray is back. All that’s left now is to change the name back (oh, and build a stadium).

The Tampa Bay Rays today made a whole lot of people happy when they unveiled a new primary road grey uniform that returns the club to a look very similar to when they first took the field. It’s a grey jersey with “TAMPA BAY” across the chest in the gradient lettering style of the original 1998-2000 Devil Rays road set, complete with the devil ray swimming beneath the wordmark, navy blue piping down the front of the jersey, and paired with a navy blue version of the original “TB” cap.

The Rays will wear the new uniform for the first time tomorrow night against the New York Yankees in the second game of their doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. You heard that correctly, they’re debuting this uniform THIS SEASON, with less than a week remaining. The uniform will replace the Columbia blue burst-logo jersey as the club’s primary road uniform going forward.

It’s the most significant step yet in the franchise’s years-long drift back toward its inaugural identity, following the return of the original Devil Rays home uniforms as an alternate option in 2023 and the inclusion of the O.G. style “Tampa Bay” wordmark on their City Connect set, released a year later. This marks the first time since the end of the 2007 season that the Rays will wear “TAMPA BAY” on their primary road uniform.

While the timing of this news is surprising, the announcement itself isn’t. The Rays held a fan vote back in March, in which the club presented four grey “TAMPA BAY” throwback-style road uniforms and let fans pick their choice on social media. The winner, then known as “Option 1,” was the closest to the original 1998 set, which had jumped out to over 60 percent of the vote within hours of the poll opening. Originally, that option was shown paired with the devil ray/oval cap that the Rays currently wear with their home throwback set; the uniform that was unveiled today will instead be worn with the original “TB/devil ray” logo on its cap.

While the new set is clearly built on the original road greys, it isn’t a straight throwback.

Original colours and logo positioning compared to the new placement for 2026

The gradient in the “Tampa Bay” wordmark has been updated to use the electric colours of the original home Devil Rays uniform rather than what the road version used; this matches it better with the home throwback set currently being worn. The actual position of the ray streaking across the front of the jersey has been tweaked, closing the gap between itself and the lettering that existed on the original jersey. The Rays are calling this a more cohesive, enveloped look across the buttons of the jersey.

Up top, the cap features a modernized version of the original 1998 “TB” logo, with black from the original replaced with the Rays’ current shade of navy blue both in the logo and on the cap itself. The matte-finish batting helmets will match the caps.

The original cap in 1998 was black, that’s been swapped out for navy blue on the new version for 2026

A new uniform debuting in the season’s final week is certainly a rare move. The Chicago White Sox wore their 1991 home and road uniforms for the final two weeks of the 1990 season as they closed out old Comiskey Park. In September 2003, the Toronto Blue Jays attempted to wear their new 2004 home uniforms but were denied by the league.

It’s no accident that the uniform heavily features “TAMPA BAY” as the club’s future in the region is being finalized. The Rays are in the final stages of securing a new ballpark to keep the club in Tampa Bay for decades to come. CEO Ken Babby said the club will wear Tampa Bay across its chest because “Tampa Bay is always in our hearts.”

The jersey will be available for preorder at the Bay Republic Team Store at Tropicana Field starting today.
