Tallahassee City Commission to discuss new DEI law’s impact on city

  • September 22, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee city commissioners are scheduled to discuss changes to several programs that previously fell under diversity, equity and inclusion at a meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Starting Jan. 1, Florida law will ban local governments from funding, running or promoting DEI programs under Senate Bill 1134, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. City leaders are reviewing programs and policies now to make sure they comply when the law takes effect, including city contracts, community events and future proclamations.

On Wednesday’s agenda, Tallahassee leaders are set to discuss the city’s future with the Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

The advisory committee has been in existence since 2013. It is managed by the Oasis Center for Women and Girls, which receives more than $68,000 each from the city and county specifically supporting operations.

Because the commission’s mission focuses specifically on “sex,” city attorneys say its current resolution violates the new law. The city and county are working on a revised mission for the organization.

Dr. Jazmyne Bryant, chair of the Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, said the city has been working with the commission to find the best way forward.

“We’ve been serving our community for over 15 years… we have to find a way to do it that’s in compliance and that’s what the goal is,” Bryant said.

Commissioners are also being asked to extend the city’s contract with the Oasis Center through the end of the year, along with the terms of seven commission members.

Bryant said the county already approved the extension, and it is now up to the city to do so.
