Floodwater covers southwest Cape Coral streets, leaving cars stuck and yards soaked

Madison ZaleskiCAPE CORAL, Fla. —

Heavy rains submerged streets in Cape Coral Monday night. Neighbors say floodwater covered Southwest 29th Street in Cape Coral, and some of that water is still lingering in yards and driveways.

“As far down as you can see, there was people out here walking in it, and they were at least shin high,” said Samantha Richardson.

Samantha Richardson shared a video to Facebook on Monday. In the video, you can see one of her neighbors even trying to move a jet ski out of the floodwater.

Now, some of that water still lingers in the grass and along the road.

“People, you know, park on the side of their roads and then now their cars are getting stuck in the mud and their grass is getting destroyed,” said Richardson.

For neighbors like Irene Stevenson, the water is still making it difficult to walk around her driveway.

“It’s annoying, of course, because you can’t get out. You know, I have to drive out to go anywhere,” said Stevenson.

This part of Cape Coral off Skyline Boulevard got more than two inches of rain from the storm on Monday.

“If I came out here with a ruler, that was more than two inches. So it’s more of a backup thing that was going on,” said Richardson.

The Cape Coral Fire Department also stepped in to help drivers whose cars got stuck on a flooded road between Lowe’s and Cape Coral High School Monday.

Richardson says flooding and drainage problems have been a headache for years.

“If it’s an issue around the area, we need to look at our public works and see what’s going on with the drainage and backup,” said Richardson.

Gulf Coast News reached out to the city about Southwest 29th Street. They told us their stormwater staff is not aware of any planned drainage improvement project or assessments for that area.

Remember to not drive through flooded roads, especially with barriers around them. Instead, turn around and find an alternate route.
