To walk or ride a bike in Tampa Bay is a gamble.
Last summer, Florida Phoenix reported on a new Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition study that ranks the Bay area as the eighth most dangerous metro area in the country and the most dangerous in Florida (there were 516 pedestrian fatalities in the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater area between 2008-2024, according to the study’s interactive map). What’s more is that people of color and low-income communities continue to be killed at disproportionate rates, according to the study.
For one day this weekend, activists from Walk Bike Tampa invite neighbors to imagine a world without cars.
The fourth annual World Car-Free Day offers opportunities to walk, bike, or scooter on a 5.3-mile course between activity hubs that stretch between Westshore, Midtown, downtown Tampa and Ybor City.
Giveaways, markets, prizes, food trucks, public art and live music are all scheduled along with the Fourth Annual Kidical Mass Bike Ride, which will happen between Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and the Meacham Urban Farm, using two-way protected bike lanes on Cass Street.
