A person was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after reports of shots fired prompted a large law enforcement response at Miami International Airport, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

MDSO said deputies responded to the airport at approximately 4:05 p.m. following reports of shots fired and detained an individual. Authorities said there is no active shooter, no ongoing threat to the public and no reported injuries.

MDSO spokesman Joseph Peguero Rivera described what happened as an isolated incident. Miami International Airport officials confirmed all passengers and employees were safe.

Detectives later determined the person fired several shots toward the ground or at a trash can near Door 13 on the departures level outside the terminal. Authorities have not said what led to the shooting.

The law enforcement activity prompted closures and traffic changes at the airport. About two hours later, MIA officials later said the departure level and roadway lanes had fully reopened and operations were returning to normal.

Around 4:30 p.m., Chopper 4 images showed a significant law enforcement presence outside the terminal, with multiple MDSO vehicles gathered along the roadway and several deputies outside their vehicles. Video from the scene also showed the person being taken into custody by MDSO deputies. The individual’s identity has not been released.

A witness who arrived shortly after the incident described seeing frightened passengers and employees and said an airport employee reported hearing multiple shots.

Earlier, the departure level between Doors 12 and 17 had been closed, along with the outer lanes of the departure-level roadway, with vehicle traffic diverted to the arrivals level.

MDSO has not released additional information about the person taken into custody. The person was being questioned by investigators Wednesday evening, according to MDSO.

The investigation remains ongoing.
